About the Jamborun

The Mikel Lovina Jamborun is a run that commemorates the passing of Mikel Lovina who passed away at the age of 18 in a car accident 26 years ago.

Mikel and his cousins often used to get together for fun family activities which they called Jamborees. In 2013, family members decided to honor Mikel’s memory with a family fun run. Because the run was another one of their Jamborees, they dubbed it the Jamborun. From then on, the Jamborun became a yearly tradition. And in recent years, the Jamborun evolved into a charity activity in partnership with NVC Foundation, starting with the donation of a pedicab (bike with a sidecar for passengers) in 2017 and another one in 2018. Mikel’s sister, champion triathlete Ines Santiago, has successfully been spearheading the Jamborun to help many people, particularly hungry children.

A group of friends met up at Bonifacio Global City, Philippines to race to raise funds for Mingo Meals on the first morning of the Mikel Lovina Jamborun 2023.

A Race to Raise Funds

This year, the run raised enough to feed 300 children in Palawan. They will receive daily Mingo Meals for six months. In 2022, the run generated funds for 85,439 Mingo Meals for the children of Siargao after it was ravaged by Typhoon Odette. In 2021, the run raised funds for 58,625 Mingo Meals for the Feeding Force Project to combat hunger due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Prior to that, the Mikel Lovina Jamborun raised funds to give Mingo Meals and LoveBags full of school supplies to children in need. When Taal and Mayon volcanoes erupted in recent years, the run funded Mingo Meals for families in evacuation centers.

Children at an evacuation center thanked the Mikel Lovina Jamborun 2020 participants for sending Mingo Meals to them after Taal Volcano erupted in January of that year.

Mingo Meals for Marufinas, Palawan

The island province of Palawan in the southwestern part of the Philippines is known for its stunning beaches and well-preserved natural resources. Home to the province’s famous underground river, the barangay of Marufinas is one of the top three destinations in the province. Sadly, Marufinas is also part of the Top 3 on another list. It is one of the barangays with the most malnourished children. These malnourished children are from the Batak and Tagbanua Indigenous Peoples.

The Mikel Lovina Jamborun 2023 raised funds to feed 300 children in Marufinas for 6 months. Our ground partners led by Marigs Laririt kicked off the feeding for the first batch of children on April 21. We are happy to report that the children are responding well to the program.

Children of Marufinas enjoyed their first bowl of Mingo.

Help Out from Anywhere in the World

The Jamborun is an annual event, usually held at the end of January. Starting 2021, the run became a virtual event open to anyone in the world. Though the organizers are based in the Philippines, participants from various countries including Australia, Canada, Dubai, Spain, UAE and the United States have participated in this activity.

To join, simply register for the event, then on the specified date(s) run (or walk) and track your distance on a device. You can walk indoors or outdoors, in one go or throughout the day. Send in your total distance using the registered app and the organizers will tally everything for you. For every kilometer you run, a child will be fed.

Those who wish to help raise funds but cannot race can donate directly to the cause.

The organizers will soon start planning the Mikel Lovina Jamborun 2024. Stay tuned for more details!
