LoveBags

NVC gives out LoveBags to school children in need. Pre-pandemic, a LoveBag was a sturdy colorful backpack with all the essential school supplies for one school year. For a little extra, we would add in a pair of flipflops to clad feet that would otherwise walk barefoot to school. Over time, LoveBags have been modified to best serve the needs of the children we serve. Learn more about LoveBags.

LoveBags in the Time of Covid

In 2020 and 2021, we did not give out a lot of LoveBags. This was because the pressing concern at the time was addressing hunger. Besides, face to face classes had not resumed.  However, there were some requests for Love Bag donations that we could not say no to.

One of our dear NVC volunteers passed away in 2020 and her family and friends wanted to donate Love Bags in her honor. And our loyal partners, the Spouses of the Heads of Mission (SHOM), also asked us to donate LoveBags to children. And so we did.

In 2021, partners working with children in Marawi also requested LoveBags so we kicked off a campaign to raise funds for 300 LoveBags for these children. Many donors stepped forward and after just a month, we were able to send off 300 LoveBags to Marawi.

Adapting to Changes

Through the years, LoveBags and their contents have changed to best address the situation at hand. From 2020 to 2021, LoveBags contained basic school supplies and hygiene kits. And when schools in the Philippines went back to face-to-face classes in 2022, we made changes to the LoveBag once more.

To reach as many children as possible, we had to find a way to make our funds go a long way. We opted for more budget-friendly waterproof satchels instead of backpacks. This allowed us to reach out to more students and to give them additional educational support as needed. Depending on the situation of the students, we sometimes also provided footwear (flipflops or school shoes), uniforms, umbrellas, raincoats, water bottles or even jeepney fare.

Though the LoveBag may undergo changes from time to time, our commitment to help these children get a better life will never waver.
